The Streets of Upper St. Clair
Many of the roads in the township were built for the sole purpose of providing access to farms and as a result, were named after the farm owners. The roads were built according to the landscape or the lay of the land, and had to be built around hills and valleys, streams, ponds, and springs, and trees and other obstacles. In most cases, the routes of the roads were chosen based on the terrain that required the least amount of modification which resulted in long winding roads that traveled up, down, and round various obstacles. During these times (1800's), the roads were dirt/mud.
